Why I donate portraits…

I am deeply passionate about donating my work to those who have experienced a loss. My commitment began when a woman in my congregation lost her son unexpectedly. Although I had never spoken to her before, I felt compelled to help.

I decided to draw a portrait of her son for her. Unsure of how to approach the situation, I called her husband to see if I could drop it by. He agreed, mentioning that she would appreciate a visit. However, when I arrived, it was clear she didn’t want company. Understanding her need for space, I left the gift in a small envelope with a simple apology and walked away.

As I was leaving, she came running after me, hugged me tightly, and started sharing her grief. This experience highlighted how an artistic representation of their loved one can open hearts and provide comfort. It reinforced my belief that even when we don’t know how to help, showing we care makes a significant difference.

I see the struggles people face and offer what I can. My work is a way to say, “I see you. I acknowledge your pain, and I am here for you.”

This story captures the essence of why I continue to donate my work. It’s about connecting with others in their time of need and offering support in the best way I know how.
